Women Are Warriors

Women are Warriors

Women are Warriors

This idea came about for a Skillshare project for Dylan Mierzwinski’s class Digitizing Hand-drawn Sketches with Character. The class project was to create an illustration based on your name, and I have always thought mine was very boring. Alanna just means Fair or beautiful and I thought that was a very boring notion for an illustration.

It was only through a discussion with someone from my art group (the Everyday Creatives, which you can read about here) that I recalled Tamora Pierce’s series of books from my childhood. In those books Alanna was a fierce lady-knight, and something about that idea sparked my creativity in a big way. Reading about Alanna of Trebond in my adolescent years was one of the first times I had encountered a woman who was powerful and independent. That single project grew into this series of Women Warriors.
