Location

The Retreat will take place at a Country Estate in the Yorkshire Dales, in the village of Giggleswick, which sits along the bank of the Ribble river opposite the village of Settle. Our venue rests about 1 hour from Leeds airport, or 1.5 hours from Manchester. The address will be provided following registration and payment.

Settle is a bustling, historic  market town at the gateway to Upper Ribblesdale and in sight of the wild Forest of Bowland.  Amid it's maze of old streets, creeping up the hillside, the town is full of independent shops, cafés, inns and restaurants . The surrounding limestone landscape abounds with stone walls, meadows, scars, peaks, waterfalls, becks and caves. There are cattle in the valleys and sheep on the dales.

From our country home you'll be well situated to journey into the depths of Gaping Gill, one of the largest underground chambers in Britain; or take a scenic rail trip on the famous Settle-Carlisle line, crossing the longest railway viaduct in the country at Ribblehead.

Accomodation

The Country Estate (Woodlands) was built in 1905 as a country gentleman's residence. It has now been beautifully restored and furnished in simple early twentieth century style. We'll have the whole place to ourselves to create, explore and connect. Enjoy drawing in the drawing room, breakfast on the terrace, or just relaxing in front of the fire in the lovely panelled sitting room. Woodlands has beautiful views of Settle from every window, and if you can tear yourself away from the house, it's within easy walking distance of Settle, and the Yorkshire Dales beyond.

Activities

On October 11, there will be a full-day workshop with Claire Alexander. Discover what makes for successful picture book characters, before creating your own with guidance from author and illustrator Claire Alexander. Spend time analyzing and discussing contemporary picture book characters, considering what makes them appeal to children, adults and publishers, and why. You’ll learn how to write a character study and paint or collage your character in a colour vignette. Using watercolours as a medium Claire will demonstrate techniques to help you build textures to collage or paint with. You will also learn about Claire’s own work and find out how to present ideas to publishers.

During the afternoon on October 12, we'll make a trip to Bolton abbey via coach bus. The Abbey is a 12th Century ruin, with a standing priory church still in use . The abbey ruin, located on the banks of the River Wharfe is often referred to as “one of the most Beautiful historical sites in England” and has inspired artists like Turner and writers like Wordsworth. We'll spend the afternoon, braving the stepping stones, wandering the ruins and surrounding countryside, sketching, and perhaps grabbing something to eat at one of the restaurants or tea rooms nearby.
